In his press conference ahead of his Rennes side’s fixture against Strasbourg on Sunday, manager Bruno Génésio notably reacted to the news that Ligue 1 authorities were planning to move next February’s Monaco-Lyon fixture to Shanghai.
His words transcribed in L’Équipe, the former Lyon coach expressed his disapproval at the idea, adding that apart from the financial aspect of such an event he did not see the point.
“On Mars. Let’s go to Mars. I understand that those in charge are looking for solutions to French clubs’ financial problems. But going to play a Ligue 1 match in China – apart from the financial interest, I don’t really see what it will bring, and I wish good luck to the managers for the journey and recovery.”
