Simeone wishes Griezmann “the best” at Barcelona

When speaking with Spanish sports daily, Marca, Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone seemed to distance himself from the idea that France international, and former Atléti forward, Antoine Griezmann, might re-join the Madrid side.

“I want the best for him and I hope he will succeed at Barcelona,” said Simeone. “He is at an extraordinary club and Antoine is a complete player. At EURO 2020, he again proved he can bring a lot [to a team] regardless of his positioning. But today, he is not with us. I only wish the best for a player who gave me everything.”

With Barcelona in financial difficulties, Griezmann’s departure has been widely discussed in recent days. The Catalan club approached Juventus over the idea to trade the World Cup winner for Argentine forward Paulo Dybala according to L’Équipe while discussions were had with Atlético over a possible swap deal involving Saúl Ñíguez.

Meanwhile, Atléti president Enrique Cerezo had said earlier this week: “The return of Griezmann? Everything is possible in football.” But Simeone’s comments play down that notion for now, although Griezmann’s future remains in flux.
