Aston Villa’s Morgan Sanson came close to joining Espanyol this summer

L’Équipe report this tonight that Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson came close to joining Espanyol this summer, but the Frenchman’s move to Catalonia could not be completed in time.

The former Marseille man was looking to push through a summer switch having only made twelve appearances last year for the Premier League side – and none so far this year – and a loan deal with the Barcelona side had been agreed.

However, the documents were sent 15 minutes after the deadline, meaning the move fell through. The Frenchman will now be looking to convince manager Steven Gerrard that he can contribute in midfield.

The 28-year-old, a former French youth international, arrived in England during the January 2021 transfer window and has made 20 appearances so far for the Villans, after a four and a half-year spell at Marseille, who he had joined from Montpellier. His contract with the English side runs until 2025.
