Bordeaux midfielder Mehdi Zerkane’s contract terminated

Bordeaux have this afternoon announced that the contract of attacking midfielder Mehdi Zerkane has been terminated, with the Algerian international leaving the club after a three-year spell.

The 23-year-old was spending this season on loan at OFI Crete FC but ended his loan spell there after failing to feature across the campaign so far. He was a regular in Jean-Louis Gasset’s Bordeaux sides in the 2020/21 season, making 27 appearances in Ligue 1, before falling away in the next year. Over the course of the 2021/22 season, he was limited to just six matches by Vladimir Petković.

Zerkane has been criticised within the club over an alleged lack of commitment and was notably excluded from the squad last January. He was once again among the “loft” of unwanted players this summer, and was the only member of that group the club were not able to move on ahead of the start of their Ligue 2 campaign.
