France’s Raphaël Varane will be fit for the World Cup

L’Équipe report this afternoon that France defender Raphaël Varane will have recovered from his thigh injury in time for the World Cup, with a potential return to club training next week before flying out to Qatar.

The Manchester United centre-back had picked up the injury on October 22 in a draw against Chelsea, which led to major concerns over the France vice-captain’s fitness just one month before they were due to kick off against Australia for their first group stage match.

However, Varane has been on track in his recovery and is already back to running exercises in the last few days, having previously spent time at the French national team base at Clairefontaine to undergo treatment.

The 29-year-old is not expected to feature in Manchester United’s final two games before the World Cup break, but Didier Deschamps will know that, should he choose to call him up, Varane will in all likelihood be available to play and take part in Les Bleus’ title defence.
