President of the Ile-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse has called on PSG to sanction their midfielder Idrissa Gueye (32) for his opposition to wearing a shirt with a rainbow flag in his side’s victory again Montpellier on Saturday.
Speaking on Twitter, Pécresse said, “The player of a football club, and particularly those who play for PSG, are role models for our children. They have a duty to set an example. Idrissa Gueye’s refusal to associate himself with the fight against homophobia can not go without sanction!”
Pécresse also tagged PSG’s official Twitter account in the tweet. It is the second consecutive year that Gueye has missed the match dedicated to the LGBT+ rights campaign. His absence raised questions before RMC confirmed on Sunday that his opposition to the campaign was the reason for his absence from Saturday night’s match.
Pécresse is the President of the wider Paris region and also ran for Les Républicains during the 2022 French presidential elections.
