Speaking to L’Équipe England manager Gareth Southgate reflected on being booed by fans after the 4-0 defeat to Hungary in Wolverhampton in June.
The Three Lions struggled for form in the summer international, failing to win any of their six Nations League fixtures, and notably succumbing 4-0 to Hungary in England. That run of form led to Southgate being booed for the first time as England manager.
“It wasn’t very nice (to be booed in the Hungary match) and that happened again in Milan. If the results aren’t at the expected level, supporters can have a hostile reaction. I understand that. In my career, all the difficult moments have made me stronger. That has been true again with the recent critics, which have led me to manage my players differently,” said Southgate.
“Some of the senior management stepped forward and spoke in front of the group. We have been expecting that from them for a long time, but they haven’t had the chance to do it, because this team hasn’t faced adversity until now,” he continued.
