Speaking to BeIN Sport Saudi Arabia manager Hervé Renard talked about messages he received from various managers following his side’s 2-1 win over Argentina in what was one of biggest upsets in World Cup history in the first group game. Renard spoke specifically about the message he received from Lucien Favre to which he had to respond to “out of deep respect”.
He said that Lucien Favre sent him a congratulations message which said “you don’t have to respond you have a lot of work to do” to which Renard responded “Given the enormous respect I have for you, I can’t not respond.”
Renard went on to give some insight about the level of respect that exists between French coaches – saying “it’s just like that, when you have the same job – I’m sure it is similar for you journalists (smiles)”.
Whilst Saudi Arabia were eliminated after the group stage following some promising performances, it won’t be the last we see of Hervé Renard, who is staying in Qatar as a pundit on BeIN Sport for the knockout stages of the competition – he’ll first feature on coverage of Morocco’s clash with Spain in the last 16 on Tuesday.
