According to L’Équipe, France has decided that Hugo Lloris will not be wearing the rainbow-coloured armband in support of LGBTQIA+ rights at the World Cup after FIFA did not respond to the French Football Federation’s request about whether or not the France captain could wear the armband.
France had written to FIFA on two occasions asking whether they could have permission to wear the ‘One Love’ armband during the tournament – yet a lack of response from football’s international governing body convinced the federation that they will not force France captain Lloris to wear the armband against Australia next Tuesday.
Lloris has already spoke about the political context of the Qatar World Cup, reservedly suggesting that he’d respect the wishes of the host country Qatar and would like to keep his personal opinion out of the matter, mirroring the view of federation president Noël Le Graët that the goalkeeper and captain shouldn’t wear the armband.
