Jules Koundé explains how Barcelona convinced him to sign from Sevilla

After getting linked with multiple clubs over the years, Jules Koundé finally secured his move to Barcelona in the 2022 summer transfer window.

Speaking to L’Équipe, the 23-year-old defender confirmed that he wanted to be part of a “new wave” for La Blaugrana and Xavi played a role in convincing him to join the Catalan giants. He said:

“Firstly, I arrive in a huge club, which has known good times and which, lately, has been winning less. I’m coming to a project that I wouldn’t call a reconstruction, because we already have a competitive team, but rather a rebound. I was interested in being part of this new wave, in search of titles, and putting Barça back where it has always been, among the best. Then there was the conversation with the coach(Xavi). We talked about football, mainly. I felt a real confidence, a real knowledge of my game and my qualities.”

He continued:

“As a central defender, that’s why I chose Barça, because I know that most of the time I will play in the centre-back position. Afterwards, the conditions – between injuries and recruits that the club hoped to have earlier in the transfer window – meant that I started on the right side more often. Even if, in cumulative playing time, I am used as much in the middle as on the side.”

Since joining Barcelona, the Frenchman has made five appearances in all competitions for his new club, registering three assists while playing mainly down the right side for Xavi’s team.
