Karim Benzema ruled out for entirety of World Cup

Le Parisien and RMC Sport report that Real Madrid striker and Ballon D’Or winner Karim Benzema has been ruled out of the World Cup this evening after suffering a quadriceps tear during a training session in Doha on Saturday night.

Benzema tore his left quadriceps simply through over-extension whilst running and the injury does not represent a further setback on some of the other issues he has been managing, notably a hamstring and knee problem.

These issues had however meant that Benzema had not featured fully in a collective France training session since Les Bleus came together at Clairefontaine on Monday. The practice this evening was his first back up to full speed but was cut short when he hobbled off the pitch mid-way through the session.

After undergo an initial MRI and further tests at the Aspetar clinic this evening, the ultimate conclusion was that Benzema’s World Cup adventure must end before it even began.

Didier Deschamps must replace him, should he decide to do so, before Monday evening, which is the deadline to make changes to the 26-man squad, 24 hours before Les Bleus’ opener vs Australia.
