Kylian Mbappé could open the door to PSG renewal

L’Équipe report that Kylian Mbappé could open the door to a renewal with Paris Saint-Germain, notably with a view to becoming the club’s all-time record goalscorer by overtaking Edinson Cavani’s 200 goals.

The World Cup winner had drawn level with Zlatan Ibrahimović on 156 goals for Les Parisiens with his double against Saint-Étienne on Saturday.

The forward then commented on the achievement post-match, stating that “Edi remains [in front], we’ll see how things go. Of course being PSG’s all-time top scorer is nothing to scoff at”.

With Mbappé yet to make a concrete decision on his future, particularly amid the Champions League tie against Real Madrid, it appears that the forward is leaving the door open to a contract extension. This is particularly relevant given that the 23-year-old has previously stated that he would like to “leave a mark in people’s minds, whether it be in terms of statistics or visual memory.”

Nevertheless, the likelihood remains that he will leave at the end of the season, notably due to his feeling that he has been around the block in Ligue 1 and would like to begin a new chapter.

Another important factor which could play a part in his decision is the affection shown by the Parc des Princes towards him in the last few weeks. The goalscorer, who has not been as popular as the likes of Verratti and Marquinhos, has previously felt that his contributions were not being appreciated.

Nevertheless, his relationship with the fans appears to have changed since the boos at the start of the season after his push to leave for Real Madrid.  This was clear from the Parc des Princes’ standing ovation and round of applause on his substitution on Saturday, and the banner at the start of the match stating “From Bondy to Paris, Kylian your story is written here.”
