Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy released on bail

Various outlets including Sky Sports report this afternoon that French left-back Benjamin Mendy has been released on bail following a hearing today.

The 27-year-old has been accused of seven counts of rape and one of sexual assault, against five different women. The alleged events took place between October 2020 and August 2021.

Mendy had been in custody since August, having been held at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool, before being transferred recently to HMP Manchester. He was suspended by his club, Manchester City, pending the police investigation.

The left-back’s trial will take place in June at the earliest, with bail granted until January 24, when his next hearing will take place.
