Many obstacles for Remy Cabella to re-join Saint-Étienne

As reported by L’Équipe, despite the cancellation of his contract with Russian club Krasnodar after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, there are many obstacles to former Saint-Étienne midfielder Remy Cabella re-joining the Ligue 1 club, as has been mooted this week.

Firstly, Cabella hasn’t played since mid-November and, with only 10 games to go this season, he likely wouldn’t be match fit quickly enough to have an impact before the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, having, for now, removed themselves from the bottom three, ASSE coach Pascal Dupraz is happy with the harmony he’s created in the dressing room at the club. Cabella’s influence adds an unknown element to the group which could destabilise that togetherness.

There are also contractual concerns. Cabella, now 32, is looking for two further years added on to any deal he signs in the near future – Montpellier have also been mentioned as a possible destination. However, given Les Verts’ sporting uncertainty as they battle against relegation, the club are unable to offer a deal of that length at this stage.
