Lionel Messi became the saviour for Paris Saint-Germain as Benfica salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Ligue 1 champions on Wednesday evening.
Speaking to RMC Sport after the game, Marco Verratti, who made his return from an injury against the Portuguese counterparts, hailed Messi for his inspiring performance. The 29-year-old Italy international said:
“It’s incredible what Messi does, you never get used to it. It’s in the simple things that you fall in love with him. For me, who loves football like that, he is an example, he is the best in history.”
The Argentinian put PSG ahead with a fantastic left-footed strike in the 22nd minute of the game, notching up his 19th goal for the Paris-based club. Danilo Pereira put the ball into his own nets to award the hosts an equaliser just before the end of the first half. With the game coming to an end without any further change in the scoreline, PSG had to leave Portugal with just one point.
