Marco Verratti on PSG’s European woes: “We sometimes forget that you need to suffer to win.”

In an interview during which he responded to questions from Le Parisien readers, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti spoke on a number of topics, including the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

The Italian midfielder notably points to the Spanish side’s European experience, especially in adversity, as one of the factors that led to the turnaround in the tie and Karim Benzema’s hat trick.

“At that level, in the Champions League, these are matches where everything can happen very quickly. In fact, Real Madrid did it again against Chelsea and Manchester City. They’re a team who are used to playing in games and suffering. Here in Paris, we sometimes forget that you need to suffer to win.”

“And we need to understand that all together – the players, the club, the supporters. We’re the ones on the pitch, but there’s this atmosphere around us which is such that we have to win 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 all the time. But football is not that anymore. There are no longer any small teams in the Champions League.”
