Speaking after his Paris Saint-Germain’s home draw against Troyes, Mauricio Pochettino defended his decision not to give game time to young players with the Ligue 1 title already in the bag.
His words transcribed in RMC Sport, the Argentine reacted as many supporters were frustrated by the absence of the likes of Xavi Simons and Edouard Michut from the team sheet.
The match nevertheless did see 18-year-old midfielder Ismaël Gharbi make his league debut, coming on for Ángel Di María at the end of the game.
“I didn’t say they were going to play, I said they might have some minutes. We’ve built a team with 30 established players. It wasn’t changed in January. The room for young players is not big. They have to deserve this playing time.”
“They’ve been training with us since day one. That’s a first step. We’ll have to see what the team looks like in the future to see if they can get some playing time.”
