RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins reports this morning that Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is confident about his place in the France squad for the World Cup, which Didier Deschamps reveals in a TV appearance on tonight’s evening news.
Maignan’s calf injury, which he first picked up during the September international break, has been a cause for concern after the issue emerged again just as he was preparing to return to action for the Rossoneri. The setback was initially thought to have scuppered his chances of going to Qatar, but the shot-stopper is now closing in on a return to full fitness.
The 2020/21 Ligue 1 title-winner with Lille is reported to have spoken with the France staff and, privately, is confident that he will be called up – an alternative option for Deschamps would be to call up the veteran Steve Mandanda, with West Ham man Alphonse Areola taking up the third-choice spot.
