In an interview with Le Parisien published this evening, Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was notably asked about his role in securing the contract renewal of Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid’s expense.
How would you define your relationship with Kylian Mbappé?
I don’t like speaking about myself. But for the last five years, I’ve built up a special relationship with Kylian and his family. He has an incredible family. I’ll never forget that in our first six meetings with him and his parents, when he was at Monaco, they never spoke to me about money. Never!
That’s why I like them a lot, I admire the way he was brought up. This year, we spoke a lot, but money was only brought up in the last few weeks. People say he stayed for the money, but Real Madrid were offering much more than us! They were ready to put €170m on the table last summer. They were ready to invest that amount again this year even though he was free!
People are saying that his input is now dominant at PSG?
People need to stop talking nonsense. I’m going to be very clear: I’m the president and I’m the one who decides. And most importantly Kylian never asked for any player or any manager. I promise you.
And on Luis Campos?
He never mentioned a single name. He just gave his vision, how things can be improved. That’s it.
Luis Campos had been mandated by Real Madrid to sign Mbappé – was that not an issue for you?
We are in a world where everyone knows each other and the best work for the best. Today, Mbappé is in Paris and so is Campos, that’s all I’m interested in.
