L’Équipe are reporting that Newcastle United were prepared to pay €35m for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s French midfielder Manu Koné (21), but the German club have no interest in selling.
Newcastle made no official offer for Koné, but informed Mönchengladbach that they were prepared to pay €35m for the versatile midfielder. However, the German club quickly communicated that they weren’t open to negotiations for the player.
Koné joined Mönchengladbach for €9m from Toulouse in January 2021 and last season he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, despite the club struggling overall. With a contract running until 2025, and the club determined to improve on last season’s disappointing showing, Mönchengladbach aren’t entertaining offers for Koné.
According to L’Équipe, Mönchegladbach’s ‘no’ is definitive, although the French paper add that there is the potential for Koné to leave the club next summer.
Last season, Koné made 27 Bundesliga appearances for Mönchengladbach and he has featured in every minute of their current campaign.
