Official | Karim Benzema misses World Cup, Deschamps “extremely sad”

The French national team have this evening confirmed that Karim Benzema withdraws from their 26-man World Cup squad, for a tournament that kicks off tomorrow, after he suffered a quadriceps tear in training in Doha on Saturday night.

The player, according to the French Football Federation, will be out for 3 weeks following the tear.

Didier Deschamps had the following to say on the matter:

“I am extremely sad for Karim who had made this World Cup a major objective of his. Despite this latest blow for the French team, I have full confidence in my squad. We will do everything to meet the immense challenge that awaits us.”

Le Parisien report that the French national team staff will take a decision tomorrow morning on whether or not to call up someone to replace Karim – they have until Monday evening to do so, per FIFA rules relating to injury-enforced squad alterations.

Benzema had been suffering with knee and hamstring problems in the lead up to the World Cup and had been training away from the rest of the France squad since they all joined up together at Clairefontaine on Monday, until Saturday night, where he joined them for the first time, only for him injury is left quadriceps minutes later, in a non-contact injury.
