Newcastle have tonight announced the signing of Dutch defender Sven Botman from Lille, who has completed his medical and put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
Although the Magpies have not disclosed the fee, L’Équipe indicate that the centre-back has moved to the Premier League side for a fee which is above the €40m mark.
The English side indicate that they fended off a number of European clubs to secure Botman’s signing – this would include the Dutchman’s initial preferred destination in Milan, who were ultimately unable to match Newcastle’s offer.
Botman leaves Les Dogues having made 79 appearances across his two seasons in the north of France, notably playing a key role in their unexpected Ligue 1 title win last season under Christophe Galtier.
The 22-year-old has struggled this season amid Lille’s failed title defence under Jocelyn Gourvennec, having been affected by injuries but nevertheless retained his high value in the transfer market across the continent.
