Red Star match abandoned following fan protests over club sale

Tonight’s third-tier match between Red Star FC and Sète was abandoned before half-time in the midst of protests from fans of the home side who are opposed to the sale of the club.

Supporters of the Paris-based unfurled banners aimed at American investors 777 Partners, who owner Patrice Haddad had entered into exclusive negotiations with for a 100% stake in the club.

The match was interrupted as the southern side were leading 1-0, as flares were being thrown onto the pitch to a backdrop of banners reading “777 not welcome” and “777 out”.

French football’s fourth oldest club – founded in 1897 – currently sit 11th in the league, and were last in Ligue 2 in 2018-19.
