Speaking in a lengthy interview with L’Équipe, Rennes sporting director Florian Maurice spoke about Rennes’ relationship with the France national team, and is still questioning the non-selection of Martin Terrier in place of Randal Kolo Muani in the squad which travelled to Qatar, and eventually, reached the final of the 2022 World Cup.
Maurice says that he was ‘surprised’ not to receive a phone call from the national team to talk about his players, notably Martin Terrier and Benjamin Bourigeaud. He then says “because in my squad there is a player who scored 21 goals last season, who is one of the best French players, and I never received one call about him”.
Maurice then uses the example of Randal Kolo Muani to back up his point, claiming that “fine, he’s a very good player, no problem” but that he was “surfing on his form at his last season at Nantes”. Maurice then takes aim at Didier Deschamps indirectly, saying that “maybe he doesn’t like Martin Terrier’s pofile, or maybe theres something else going on and you have to wonder. Deeply.”
