UCL: The most quarter-final appearances

The return legs of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 are coming up next and all the top sides will be gunning for places in the quarter finals. Not all will secure their places though; unfortunately some were paired for the round of 16 and it only means a few will be dumped out at this stage.

A number of top clashes are on the cards after a round of the first leg matches which came goal-laden, seeing all the games save one have at least two goals scored. Only the PSG v Real Madrid clash had one goal scored. The rest had two or more.

So, as the teams face off in a bid for quarter final tickets, which are the teams with the most appearances in the quarter finals? Here we assess them.

Bayern Munich: No team in the Champions League has had more appearances in the quarter finals than Bayern Munich. The German giants have been at this stage 19 times and are here seeking the 20th. Bayern are set to host Austrian side Salzburg in the second leg and though the Germans were lackluster in the opening leg, the SportyTrader football betting tips will surely have them as favourites at home.

Barcelona: Spanish giants Barcelona are not in contention for the Champions League title anymore after a poor run in the group stage. However, they stand out as one of the most successful teams in the round of 16. They have made it to the Champions League quarters on 18 different occasions.

Real Madrid: Another Spanish team that has really dominated the quarter finals stage of this competition is Real Madrid. The team is also the most successful in the history of the Champions League. Real Madrid have been to the quarter finals on 17 different seasons. They will be hosting PSG in the return leg of their round of 16 clash, hoping to overturn a 1-0 defeat.

Manchester United: The Red Devils have lost their shimmer in the Champions League in recent years but they stand out as one of the best performers as far as appearances in the quarter finals is concerned. They’ve been to that stage of this competition on 14 different occasions. They are in contention for a 15th appearance following a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg away in Madrid.

Juventus: Italian giants Juventus are also among top performers in the round of 16, with runs that have seen the team secure slots in the quarter finals 12 times in their history. They are eyeing a 13th appearance, and it seems they’ll get it after a 1-1 draw with Villarreal away in Spain in the first leg.

Chelsea: The top six most appearances in the quarter finals of the Champions League ends with current champions Chelsea, who have made 10 appearances at this stage. Chelsea are on the verge of making it 11, after a 2-0 win over Lille in the first leg of their round of 16 tie against Lille.
