Didier Deschamps has named Alphonse Areola as the second-choice goalkeeper for the French national team, with Mike Maignan as the new number one. Brice Samba has been called up as the third-choice goalkeeper. This is all according to a report by L’Équipe.
The retirements of Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda have left the goalkeeper position open for new faces, and Maignan was quickly and naturally selected as the new number one. However, Deschamps took some time to announce the new hierarchy and has now informed the players that Areola will be the new number two, with Samba as the third choice.
Areola has previously held the position of the second-choice goalkeeper for France before Maignan’s arrival. He now has a chance to increase his playing time if he maintains his form at West Ham United, where he has been the first-choice goalkeeper since March 1st due to the injury of Lukasz Fabianski. However, it remains to be seen if he will keep his place when Fabianski returns.
