France clinched a 2-0 win yesterday against Ireland to get one step closer to Euro 2024. Goals from Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni and Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram sealed a fifth win in as many games for Les Bleus in Group B.
A beaming Didier Deschamps was pleased with his side’s result. “We did everything we had to do to win with around ten goal-scoring opportunities against an aggressive team sitting deep”, said the France boss in a press conference transcribed by L’Équipe. “The only regret is not having scored more goals. But overall, I’m very satisfied and proud of my team.“
Deschamps was also pleased with his midfielders. Tchouaméni scored the game’s opener with a stunning curling effort. Antoine Griezmann was brilliant in combining with his teammates and Adrien Rabiot produced another strong performance. France’s national team boss also praised his side’s defence. Les Bleus are yet to concede a goal in the European Qualifiers. “It’s not just the defensive players“, says Deschamps. “Everyone is focused as soon as we lose the ball. We are also not going to take the credit away from Mike Maignan. Above all, we have this ability to defend well together.” France will face Germany in a friendly game at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.
