Dimitri Payet handed five-game ban for slap

The LFP – the governing body for France’s two professional leagues – has announced today that Marseille’s Dimitri Payet has been handed a five-match ban – three games of which are suspended.

The veteran was risking the suspension after he slapped Lens assistant coach Yannick Cahuzac the defeat to their rivals for second-place, in an incident which was caught on camera by Ligue 1’s domestic broadcaster Amazon Prime Video. Cahuzac, meanwhile, has been banned from the touchline for two games for his role in the altercation.

With reports indicating the former French international could retire this summer, the final game of the season – after he serves his two-game ban – could end up being the final one of his career.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi will miss the next two games after a picking up a red card against Ajaccio, in what was his return from a suspension from another sending off against Lens. The Corsican player he clashed with, Thomas Mangani, is suspended for two games as well.
