Dimitri Payet’s season is finished as Marseille suspension appeal fails

According to L’Équipe, Dimitri Payet will not feature in Marseille’s last match of the season against Ajaccio on Saturday. The appeal made by the club against the midfielder’s suspension will not be reviewed this week, leaving Payet sidelined for the remaining fixture. This development raises doubts about his future with the club, as his contract runs until June 2024.

On May 17, Dimitri Payet received a suspension for three matches, with an additional two-match suspended sentence, following his altercation with Lens assistant coach Yannick Cahuzac, which involved a slap. Marseille chose to appeal the decision made by the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary committee by approaching the French Football Federation’s appeals commission, instead of seeking assistance from the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF).

This decision was surprising, as the latter option could have potentially led to a temporary lift of the suspension while awaiting the conciliator’s opinion. However, there will be no appeals commission meeting at the French Football Federation this week, meaning Payet will not be able to play in Marseille’s final match of the season against Ajaccio.
