English U21 international goalkeeper Etienne Green (22) finds himself on the fringe at Ligue 2 outfit AS Saint-Etienne. The ASSE youth product caught the eye of many in April 2021 when he stopped a Nîmes penalty for his first ever professional start between the sticks in Ligue 1 – but things went downhill quickly for the Colchester-born shot-stopper as Les Verts were relegated the following season.

Newly-named coach Laurent Batlles reportedly had doubts on Green’s ability to establish himself as Saint-Etienne’s last line of defense. A string of disappointing performances, marred by two red card offenses against Le Havre and Pau, saw the Englishman slipped down the pecking order as Batlles sanctioned the signing of veteran goalkeeper Matthieu Dreyer (33).

The signing of reliable option Gautier Larsonneur (25) on a two-and-a-half year deal this January means Green is now the third or fourth choice Saint-Etienne goalkeeper. According to Le Progrès, Etienne Green is now looking for an exit. Belgian outfit Club Brugge are reportedly interested in order to line up a successor for stalwart Simon Mignolet (34). Etienne Green is bound with his parent club until 2025. Transfermarkt value him at around €5m.
