According to Globo, and as reported by RMC Sport Brazilian midfielder João Gomes (21) has turned down a direct offer from Olympique Lyonnais owner John Textor to join the club this winter, instead informing the American his intention to join Premier League side Wolverhampton.
The report states that during a meeting on Monday, Gomes informed Textor of his preference to join the Premier League side, who are currently fighting for survival in 17th place. This news follows earlier reports from the Brazilian press indicating Gomes’ desire to join Wolverhampton.
The situation has reportedly allowed Flamengo to drive up the transfer fee, with Les Gones’ offer said to be higher at €19 million compared to Wolverhampton’s €17 million. Globo states that Flamengo’s upcoming matches, including the Club World Cup, will not impede a transfer from being completed before the January 31st deadline.
Gomes, who under contract with Flamengo until 2027, has played 119 matches for the club and has yet to earn a call-up to the Brazilian national team.
