Former striker Sonny Anderson returns to Lyon in advisor role

As first indicated by RMC Sport, former striker Sonny Anderson is set to make his return to Lyon in an advisory role for OL Groupe, with the ex-Brazilian international to be unveiled in a press conference held tomorrow.

Anderson scored 94 goals for Les Gones over the course of his four seasons at the Stade de Gerland, and previously had stints at Marseille and Monaco before a couple of seasons at Barcelona. He is a three-time Ligue 1 winner – once with Monaco, and the latter two at at the start of Lyon’s seven-campaign streak.

The ex-forward will join as an advisor rather than a sporting director, with current Head of Recruitment Bruno Cheyrou in pole position for the latter role. Anderson becomes the latest in a long line of former players and managers of the club to take up a backroom role at OL during Jean-Michel Aulas’ 36-year reign as club president. Bernard Lacombe was previously in the role, while Gérard Houllier was the incumbent until his passing in 2020.
