Speaking to the press, France coach Didier Deschamps admitted he believes England to be the most formidable team for the 2024 Euros: “Are England the toughest opponent in the Euros? Yes, we played them during the World Cup, and they have a great generation. They have a solid team.” he told BeIn Sport.
As a reminder, France and England had met during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, in a heavily disputed quarter-final match which ultimately saw Deschamps’ team come out on top, though the Three Lions had appeared to dominate the fixture. Since then, top players Jude Bellingham (20) and Harry Kane (30) have been in exquisite form with their new clubs, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, while Bukayo Saka (22) is on fire with his boyhood club, Arsenal.
If their form continues, and the England squad isn’t bothered by injuries, no doubt they will be among the favourites for the competition. Both nations are in hat one for the Euro group draws, which will take place this Saturday, so football fans will have to wait for the knockout rounds to hope for a potential remake of that World Cup match, though Deschamps will be hoping Les Bleus avoid their cross-channel rivals until late into the competition.
