Gennaro Gattuso’s first three days in charge of Marseille training: Punches and an “Animal” style

According to L’Équipe, Gennaro Gattuso has resorted to more explosive coaching methods in his first three days as OM coach as he prepares his team for this evening’s match against Monaco. The Marseille players have been used to a more intensified and aggressive training style under Igor Tudor, and the French publication reports the former Valencia coach’s methods are not too dissimilar.

The Italian has been in charge of Les Phocéens for less than a week after replacing Marcelino. Gattuso has not been afraid to be tactile with his players and throw a few punches. This is a form of affection, rather than a sign of aggression or disappointment. It is seen as a way of congratulating his players for positive training performances.  L’Équipe report that the players are enjoying his more “animal” style in training sessions.

Leandro Balerdi commented on the impact Gattuso has had in the short time at the club, saying “From day one he gave us his heart and he expects us to do the same“. The players have seemed receptive and enthusiastic to the former midfielder’s arrival but the impact this has on the pitch remains to be seen. Marseille travel to Monaco on Saturday night.
