Houssem Aouar says he regrets having played for France

In the wake of his national team switch to Algeria, which was confirmed yesterday, Lyon playmaker Houssem Aouar (24) has expressed his regret at having played for France. The one-time French international shared a picture of himself donning the white and green jersey of Algeria on his Instagram account. Aouar made one appearance for Les Bleus, but as it was a friendly, against Ukraine back in 2020, he is not tied to representing France and was therefore free to opt to represent another country. He will therefore play for Algeria, his parents’ native country.

In a video clip released by the Algerian FA, Aouar explained his choice. The 24-year-old said he thought about playing for Algeria for a long time. “I could not see myself taking the first step because I was afraid to be seen as opportunistic. And then, Algeria’s head coach and the Algerian FA president reached out to me. I took it as a sign of fate, a second chance and I jumped at it.” Speaking on his sole France call-up three years ago, Aouar assesses he felt a regret after making his choice. “I felt I didn’t do the choice that personaly suited me.”
