Kylian Mbappé to remain at PSG even if benched, says Daniel Riolo

Kylian Mbappé’s (24) contractual standoff with PSG will end with the player remaining at the club for next season no matter what, according to Daniel Riolo. The RMC Sport journalist – who broke the news back in 2021 that Messi would join Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona – understands that the France skipper and the club’s all-time record goalscorer did not change his stance in the face of the ultimatum launched by the Ligue 1 champions.

As a reminder, Mbappé announced to PSG his intention to not trigger his one-year contract extension that would have seen him remain in the French capital until 2025 – meaning he would be a free agent come next year. PSG were taken aback and gave Mbappé a choice: extend his contract or leave this summer in order to receive what could be a record transfer fee. The Frenchman ostensibly wants to reject both options and see out the remainder of his contract with Les Parisiens.

According to Riolo, Mbappé is determined to see this very situation unfold. “I can tell you something tonight. Mbappé will be at PSG next season. Even if they [the PSG board] see this through to the end and bench him, Mbappé stays at PSG. He is ready to accept this situation.” PSG were hoping to sell Mbappé for a €200m transfer fee this coming summer. According to the RMC pundit, the lengths PSG took to undermine Mbappé can only reinforce the latter’s wish to play hardball with Les Parisiens. “The guy is dragged through the mud“, Riolo said. “How did we come to this contractual situation ? What is the way out ? There is none. The only way for PSG is to play tough and tell Mbappé that, because he didn’t renew, he will be benched all season.” Before his move on a free transfer to Juventus in 2019, Adrien Rabiot was suspended by PSG over his refusal to commit his future to Les Parisiens.

Riolo goes as far as saying that newly-appointed PSG coach Luis Enrique may be prevented from playing Mbappé by the PSG board. “Any team can win without Mbappé. But Luis Enrique will be told he has Mbappé in his squad but that he can’t field him. This is the scenario we are currently being offered.
