RMC Sport report that a pitch invader caused a brief scare for Lionel Messi after the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 match between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. The fan ran onto the pitch and charged towards the PSG star, who was visibly surprised by the intruder’s sudden appearance. The fan slipped and almost took down the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner with him.
Four security personnel were quick to apprehend the fan, tackling him to the ground before he could get any closer to Messi. Despite being restrained, the fan continued to shout towards the footballer, who didn’t turn around and headed straight to the dressing room. The incident came just days after another fan accidentally injured Andrew Robertson during Liverpool’s win over Manchester United.
For Messi, the night was another disappointment in the Champions League. Since winning his fourth title in 2015, the Argentine has suffered a series of setbacks. He has now been eliminated in the round of 16 in three consecutive seasons (with PSG in 2022 and 2023, and with Barcelona in 2021).
