Lionel Messi increasingly uncertain about PSG renewal

L’Équipe report tonight that Lionel Messi is increasingly uncertain of extending his contract with Paris Saint-Germain past this summer.

A meeting took place this afternoon between the Argentine forward’s father, Jorge, and the Ligue 1 leaders’ management, with no agreement being found.

The PSG management had been hopeful, back in January, that Messi would quickly sign on, with his option for a third year in the French capital being renegotiated in the wake of the club’s FFP-related difficulties. But the former Barcelona man and his team have yet to accept the offer.

Jorge Messi met with sporting advisor Luís Campos in Paris, in a meeting that had been scheduled for over a month, which PSG indicate is only an intermediate stage in the negotiation process. Another is set to take place in the coming days, in a different location.

Despite a promising start to the talks, the two parties appear to be increasingly distant in their positions, and Team Messi are now exploring other options. The Argentine is said to be tempted by a move to Inter Miami, with his family willing to relocate to Florida. The 35-year-old reportedly had doubts back in the summer regarding PSG’s decision to centre their project around Kylian Mbappé, even if he has publicly continued to praise his teammate. Although he has nothing against Mbappé, Messi also believes that the club should not be looking to let Neymar go. The team’s poor form and the worsening dressing room atmosphere have also played a part in his future looking increasingly uncertain.
