Marcelo Gallardo joins José Mourinho and Thiago Motta on PSG manager shortlist

With Christophe Galtier all but certain to leave this summer after a tumultuous campaign, yet another managerial hunt is now well underway at Paris Saint-Germain. According to L’Équipe this morning, despite the former Lille coach’s public optimism on reaching the second year of the contract he signed has summer, within his private circles there is no now doubt that he will be moved on.

The shortlist drawn up by the club management notably includes José Mourinho and Thiago Motta. PSG’s Sporting Advisor Luí Campos is close to Mourinho, having worked together at Real Madrid, and believes his compatriot’s demanding methods would be ideal to lead to the Parisians to success. Although talks have taken place with Mourinho’s representatives, the veteran will need more than just Campos’ support for the move to materialise, with the club’s Qatari ownership having previously expressed doubts about his arrival.

Motta, who has impressed at Bologna this season, would be club president Nasser Al Khelaifi’s choice, although some at the club are wary about his lack of experience. L’Équipe indicate that sources have told them there are yet more names on the shortlist which have not filtered through yet. Marcelo Gallardo, who has now left River Plate and wants to manager in Europe, has supporters within the club and could be a potential surprise move, while Campos is also keeping an eye on Palmeiras’ young manager Abel Ferreira. What remains clear is that the process which leads to PSG naming their next coach is far from likely to be a straightforward one, with the off-season now just two matches away.
