Mathys Tel on Didier Deschamps’ radar, door opened for Sacha Boey France call-up

France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed that Mathys Tel (18) is on his radar, however, he is perhaps not as close to a call-up as Warren Zaïre-Emery (17), whilst the door was opened to a potential call-up for Galtasaray’s Sacha Boey (23).

Neither Tel nor Boey was called up to the recent squad. Tels has had an impressive start to the season for Bayern Munich, and has earned high praise from manager Thomas Tuchel, who said that he has been training “very well.” However, given the mere presence of Harry Kane in the squad, the France youth international will find opportunities slightly limited. Tels has mostly come off the bench but still has six goals in 10 games in all competitions.

Deschamps was asked about Tels’ potential inclusion in the senior set-up, and whilst he said that the striker was on his radar, an immediate call-up perhaps looks unlikely. “He has very good efficiency relative to the game time he has had. I hope for him that he’ll get the most game time possible. He’s clearly interesting. We’re attentive. There is progress to be made. Between him and Zaïre-Emery, there is still quite a considerable difference. I am well aware that there is competition at Bayern. He is ensuring that he is optimising the game time he has,” said Deschamps during the presentation of his latest squad.

In a press conference, transcribed by RMC Sportthen spoke about a potential call-up for Galatasaray right-back Boey. The France youth international missed out, whilst Jonathan Clauss earned a recall. Deschamps said that there was space for another player to work his way into his plans. “There are other players that we are tracking in this position (right-back), clearly. But there is competition and I have to consider what is best for the national team, even if it’s a position where there aren’t a lot of concrete options at the top level. But the door is always open to more solutions,” said Deschamps when questioned about Boey specifically.
