L’Équipe are reporting that AS Monaco are “well-placed” to sign Montpellier forward Elye Wahi (20), with the France youth international’s preference on remaining in Ligue 1.
There certainly isn’t a shortage of interest in Wahi, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season for Les Héraults. In 30 Ligue 1 games this season, he has scored 17 goals and registered five assists. According to Foot Mercato, that form has caught the interest of some of Europe’s elite, including Arsenal, Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund.
There is also interest from France, notably from Monaco, who according to L’Équipe are “well-placed” to pull off the signing. Wahi doesn’t want to skip steps in his progression and is therefore interested in staying in the French top flight. Asked about his preference for a summer move by France Bleu Hérault in March, Wahi replied, “Ligue 1. Why not? I have always said that I don’t want to skip stages and I want to go step by step. We’ll see what is offered, but as I’ve always said, I’m at Montpellier and I’m very happy here. We’ll see where the wind takes me.”
However, should he make the move to the Principality club, Wahi won’t come cheap. Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin revealed to L’Équipe that he rejected a €25m offer from a Premier League club in the January transfer window, and said that if the Frenchman was a Marseille player, he would cost €60m.
