Montpellier’s free-scoring young forward Elye Wahi (20) looks set to earn a big-money move this summer after a breakout season with the Ligue 1 side. Wahi has scored 17 league goals and registered four assists this season with La Paillade. Last week, the 20-year-old put four goals past Lyon’s Anthony Lopes to become the first Ligue 1 player to score a quadruple since PSG’s Kylian Mbappé in 2018.
Montpellier are already considering Wahi’s departure t o beinevitable. Liverpool and Arsenal scouts attended the Lyon-Montpellier game, which ended 5-4 with Alexandre Lacazette also scoring a quadruple.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin reveals that he has already rejected bids from a Premier League side for Wahi. “We are in talks with his agents. We will open the door if we obtain the desired amount, otherwise, he will play one more season here”, Nicollin said. “In January, I refused a €25m plus bonuses from an English club.” According to Nicollin, Wahi is destined to play for Europe’s greatest clubs, because he has the potential to do so. The outlet reports that Nicollin would soften his stance regarding Wahi should a club submit a bid around the €30m mark for Wahi, whose contract with Montpellier will expire in 2025.
