In his press conference appearance this afternoon ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s clash against Bayern Munich tomorrow, Neymar was notably asked about his thoughts on Jakub Jankto’s coming out as gay, the Czech international making announcement on his social media channels earlier today.
The 27-year-old is currently on loan back in his home country at Sparta Prague, his parent club being La Liga’s Getafe. The former Udinese and Sampdoria man received the public backing of his club, and his announcement has drawn support from around the world of football, with other players, clubs and governing bodies alike praising Jankto. He is one of only a handful of professional players to come out, and currently the only international player to do so.
This afternoon, Neymar indicated that he was unaware of the announcement, but was nonetheless happy to add his voice to the support for Jankto:
“It’s an important day. Everyone is free, there should be less prejudice, whether that’s homophobia, racism, or any kind of discrimination. I wasn’t aware [of the announcement]. Every human being should be free to do as they want.”
