Nice to be sanctioned over banner targeting PSG manager Christophe Galtier’s mother

Paris Saint-Germain’s return to winning ways on Saturday night at the Allianz Riviera was somewhat overshadowed by tensions between manager Christophe Galtier and the Nice fans, whose reception for their former manager’s return was decidedly hostile.

The ill feeling came to a head at the end of the game, when Galtier went over to the home fans to sarcastically applaud them, after a banner had been unfurled during the game, which targeted his mother. He had also clapped sarcastically during the game, when the banner was first shown at the half-hour mark – it did not appear in its entirety on the TV broadcast, and was quickly removed. The manager gave his reasons for reacting in his post-match press conference:

“Why did I react like that? Did you see [the banner]?! Did you read it?! Did you hear?! My mother is 83 years old, she’s recovering from cancer. Full stop. The work I did last season is the reason those people can watch European matches.”

According to RMC Sport this morning, the league authorities are set to take a look at the incident, with Nice to be sanctioned and possibly fined €5,000 over the banner. The former Lille coach was also booed by the local ultras when his name was called out in the team sheets before the game, setting the tone for an evening that showed there was no love lost between Galtier and fans of the team he managed for a solitary season.
