Nice’s Aaron Ramsey heaps praise on Ligue 1: “It’s a very hard league.”

Nice’s midfielder Aaron Ramsey (32) recently gave a wide-ranging interview to L’Equipe. The 80-time Wales international joined the INEOS-owned club as a free agent last year after the termination of his contract with Juventus. When Les Aiglons came knocking, Ramsey did not hesitate to put pen to paper with Nice over a one-year deal. “For me, everything was brilliant, from the club’s vision to the way they wanted to grow“, said Ramsey. “I still wanted to play at a high level, to prove myself I could do it and this was the perfect place to show it.

The former Arsenal midfielder certainly wasted no time in settling in. He scored his first Nice goal only one minute after coming on for this debut at Toulouse during Ligue 1’s opening gameweek. Ramsey has played 28 games in all competitions with Les Aiglons. Nice are eighth-placed in the league and will play FC Basel in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals tie next week. A long-term extension is reportedly on the cards for Ramsey.

According to Ramsey, Nice are on the rise and it’s only a matter of time before the INEOS-owned French club qualifies for the Champions League. But he knows the competitiveness in Ligue 1 won’t make it easy. “It’s a very hard league, a very physical one. The ball goes from one goal to the other. Serie A is more tactical, more defense-driven with low blocks. In Italy, the gap between the top and bottom teams is bigger [than in France].” Ramsey says that he misses the Premier League, a league he describes as “otherwordly.”
