Official | Clément Lenglet joins Aston Villa on loan

Aston Villa have officially announced the loan signing of France international centre-back Clément Lenglet (28).

The former Sevilla man was not part of Xavi’s plans at Barcelona and was looking for another experience abroad after spending last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. Rennes were said to be interested in Lenglet in the event that Arthur Theate leaves, but it’s Aston Villa who have won the race to his signing.

The Birmingham-based Premier League club were expected to dip into the centre-back market following Tyrone Mings’ ACL injury. Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano adds that Aston Villa will cover 75% of Lenglet’s wages. The France international remains tied with Barcelona with a contract that runs until 2026.

At Villa, Lenglet will reunite with fellow France internationals Boubacar Kamara and Moussa Diaby. Unai Emery’s side will travel to Liverpool on Sunday to face the Reds for the Premier League’s fourth matchweek.
