Official | David Bettoni, former assistant of Zinédine Zidane, joins FC Sion

French coach David Bettoni has been appointed FC Sion manager, the Swiss club has announced. Bettoni was Zinédine Zidane’s assistant coach when the French football legend was head of Real Madrid from 2016 to 2018 and from 2019 to 2021. With his close friend Zidane at the helm, Bettoni won three Champions League titles in a row from 2016 to 2018 and two LaLiga titles, in 2017 and 2020. Before his first stint as a head coach at Sion, the 51-year-old was touted to replace Vladimir Petković at Bordeaux in 2022 and Jocelyn Gourvennec at Lille the same year.

According to Swiss outlet Le Matin, Zidane has called FC Sion president Christian Constantin to give a glowing appraisal of his trusted assistant and close friend. “Without David, I would never have done what I achieved at Real Madrid all those years“, Zidane reportedly said to Constantin. FC Sion are second to last in the Swiss Super League’s standings. Bettoni has signed a contract set to expire at the end of the season. The 51-year-old manager will lead his first training session this Tuesday.
