Olympique Lyonnais have today officially announced the departure of defender Jérôme Boateng (34) on their social media channels. The German player, whose contract with the club is coming to an end, will leave Lyon after a relatively short period.
Boateng joined Lyon in 2021 with high expectations, thanks to an impressive CV which included a FIFA World Cup win in 2014. However, his time at the French club had not lived up to the sporting ambitions initially envisaged – with Lyon plummeting in the league in the last year and now without European football.
In addition, his high financial demands, as one of the club’s biggest earners, have weighed heavily on Lyon’s finances. This is significant, specifically with the club’s financial situation under strain and scrutiny from France’s financial watchdog – the DNCG.
This season the German international has only made eight appearances in Lyon colours, following last season’s outing of 24 matches.
