Montpellier have announced Michel Der Zakarian as their new head coach following the dismissal of interim manager Romain Pitau yesterday. The former midfielder had lost seven of his eleven games at the helm of La Paillade. Last weekend, Montpellier fell away again relegation-battlers Strasbourg even after the Alsatians were down to ten men for more than fifty minutes. Montpellier slumped to fifteenth place and have only a two-point lead on the 4-team relegation zone.

A former Montpellier player, Der Zakarian was head coach of the Hérault outfit between 2017 and 2021. During these years, Montpellier were a solid mid-table side and a tricky team to play against as the Franco-Armenian put a strong emphasis on tactical and defensive discipline. In 2021, Montpellier and Brest switched coaches when Brest manager Olivier Dall’Oglio was named head coach at La Paillade and Der Zakarian took charge of the Brittany outfit. Dall’Oglio and Der Zakarian were both sacked last fall amid a run of poor results. Coincidentally, Montpellier will host fourteenth-placed Brest this Sunday for a high-stakes Ligue 1 game.
