Atlético de Madrid attacking midfielder and France international Thomas Lemar (27) has suffered a right Achilles tendon rupture during the Colchoneros‘ 3-0 away loss at Valencia, the club has officially announced. The former AS Monaco man badly fell after an aerial duel for the ball and had to be stretchered off the Mestalla pitch. Following tests, it has been revealed that Lemar has torn his right Achilles tendon.

Lemar, who was part of the France squad that went on to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia, will undergo surgery. The Stade Malherbe Caen youth product is set to miss, at least, six months of competition. It is a serious injury blow for Diego Simeone’s side. The 2017 Ligue 1 champion with AS Monaco joined Atlético de Madrid in a €72m move five years ago. He registered ten goals and 20 assists for Simeone’s side in 177 games played.
